hat should we take away from Ohio voters approving a ballot initiative to legalize adult-use cannabis in the Buckeye State with almost 57 percent in favor? Take your pick of benefits from criminal justice reform, economic development, social equity and more. But one oft overlooked benefit of legalization is public health and safety – for both consumers and non-consumers alike.

Regulating and legalizing cannabis allows for quality control and safety standards, ensuring that consumers have access to a safer and more consistent product. It also makes it easier to implement regulations regarding age restrictions and consumption limits, reducing the risk of underage use. 

As cannabis product innovation continues to advance – in medical, adult-use and illicit markets — quality control standards are more important than ever. Only regulated markets can ensure that products are tested for contaminants, potency, and purity, making them safer for consumers. In contrast, illicit-market cannabis can be full of harmful pesticides, heavy metals, pathogens and other contaminants, posing health risks to users. 

Legal cannabis producers are also increasingly driven to provide safe, effective form factors and standardized dosages, making it easier for users to control their intake and avoid overconsumption. This can reduce the risk of adverse effects and emergency room visits due to accidental overuse. It also helps ensure that users have access to routes of administration that maximize the therapeutic benefits of cannabinoid-based products. 

As for general public safety, regardless of one’s feelings about legalization, it no doubt undermines the illicit market, making communities safer by reducing the potential for organized criminal activity and violence.

Ohio Votes To Legalize Marijuana - Decimal Engineered Systems

This does not happen overnight of course, and regulated cannabis can’t often compete on price with street dealers, but the only way to ensure the systematic deconstruction of the illicit market in Ohio or anywhere else, is to provide safe and legal access to consumers.

Finally, let’s examine Ohio as a bellwether for national political issues. Long a battleground state that more recently has turned reliably republican red, Ohioans made their positions clear on abortion rights and access to adult-use cannabis, in line with national polling on both issues. 

Support for marijuana legalization has reached a new record high nationally, with seven in 10 Americans – including a sizable majority of Republicans, Democrats and independents – now backing an end to prohibition.

According to a recent update to polling regularly conducted by Gallup, “Support for marijuana legalization has reached a new record high nationally, with seven in 10 Americans — including a sizable majority of Republicans, Democrats and independents – now backing an end to prohibition.” That fact, coupled with 57 percent of Ohio voters supporting the measure, will be important as state legislators take up the issue this winter. 

The Ohio legislature does have authority to amend the law or even repeal it; however, a successful repeal effort is unlikely given legalization’s strong showing at the ballot box. The expectation is that the legislature will move to revise and refine the law, but it will only be able to restrict the new market as much as is legally and politically possible. The people of Ohio have spoken; let’s hope that their elected leaders are listening.

Lance's journey began at Maxim Integrated, where he worked on ION implant equipment, and later ventured into the avionics industry, focusing on building CH-47 automatic flight control systems. Now, as part of the Decimal team, Lance highlights the company's unique capabilities and commitment to compliance.

hen it comes to cannabis holidays - most people immediately think of 420, which has become synonymous with marijuana culture worldwide. However, in recent years, another cannabis celebration has been creeping onto the scene: July 10th, or "7/10." This date holds special significance for cannabis enthusiasts as it focuses on the consumption of cannabis concentrates. So how did we get here? How did 7/10 become the second biggest cannabis-related holiday?

Cannabis concentrates, particularly oils, waxes, and shatters have been gaining prominence within the cannabis community due to their high THC content and fast-acting effects.

The number 710, when flipped upside down, reads “OIL,” symbolizing the association with cannabis concentrates. European cannabis reform lurches forward with Germany leading the way

Rallying in Berlin with Optimism

T

he cannabis industry is rallying in Berlin for the International Cannabis Business Conference with a renewed sense of optimism, and some attendees perhaps even seeing the sun peeking through the economic storm clouds that have hovered over the industry for the better part of the last two years.

Make no mistake, the challenges are still immense. While many European countries have taken steps to legalize cannabis for medicinal purposes, there are still massive obstructions preventing market maturity, let alone progression toward adult-use legalization.

Arguably the largest and most obvious challenge is that Europe is not a monolith. Each country has its own legal framework and approach to cannabis legalization. Establishing a regulatory framework for legalized cannabis is complex and governments are choosing to individually tackle issues such as quality control, labeling, advertising, taxation, licensing, and age restrictions. Creating an effective and comprehensive regulatory system takes time and resources and has frankly not been a priority for many countries. As cannabis legalization progresses in various European countries, there is a need for harmonization of regulations to address cross-border issues, but fostering this kind of international collaboration is easier said than done. 

In addition to lingering stigma, limited public education, and health and safety concerns typically espoused by anti-reformers, another wrinkle presents challenges to full-on legalization in Europe: international treaties. Several European countries are signatories to the UN Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs and other documents that classify cannabis as a controlled substance. These treaties impose restrictions on the legalization of cannabis, making it difficult for countries to fully legalize without potential repercussions or conflicts with their international obligations. This is particularly problematic for members of the European Union. 

Which brings us to Germany, where reason for optimism is slowly beginning to sprout as the cannabis world reconvenes there once again. Germany – Europe’s largest country with a population over 83 million – is already the largest cannabis market in Europe, having legalized for medicinal use in 2017. This has led to an increase in demand and the establishment of a large and growing legal cannabis market, where health insurance providers are required to cover the costs of prescribed cannabis for eligible patients. The government successfully implemented a well-regulated framework for cultivation, distribution and sale, with strict quality control standards and safety regulations. This, along with popular demand and a progressive coalition government has led Germany to now propose a pilot program to test an adult-use legalization framework on a limited basis. 

While it’s far too early to celebrate the arrival of widespread legalization and acceptance of adult-use cannabis in Europe, the signs are there. The continent’s leading economic and political force, Germany, has established the dominant medical framework and is now looking to expand it to all adults. The cannabis legalization landscape in Europe is continuously evolving, and other countries such as the Netherlands, France, Switzerland and Czech Republic continue to push the envelope. Change comes slowly, but the will of the people and the creativity and tenacity of our industry will prevail.

A look inside the cannabis industry

A

s the global cannabinoid industry continues to develop, equipment manufacturers are compelled to take a hard look at the markets we serve. Even equipment used primarily by state-legal adult use and medical cannabis producers is now required to ensure levels of quality and consistency that were not the standard in the early days of legalization.
